Description
PCIe X4 ASM3142 VL820-Q8 Chipset 10Gbps USB3.1 4 x USB-A + 4 x USB-C Card
This ASM3142 + VL820-Q8-based PCIe USB expansion card is a powerful way to bring multiple high-speed USB-A and USB-C ports (10 Gbps) to your desktop PC. Whether you’re upgrading port availability, boosting external drive performance, or building a content creation or server rig — it’s a solid choice provided you account for slot/bandwidth compatibility and use the right cables/devices.
Product Overview
Introducing the high-performance PCI Express USB expansion card designed to dramatically upgrade your desktop PC’s external connectivity. With ultra-fast USB 3.1 Gen2 (10 Gbps) support and multiple Type-A and Type-C ports, this card is ideal for connecting high-speed external storage, docking stations, USB hubs, VR gear, and more.
Built on the proven ASM3142 + VL820-Q8 chipset combination, this card delivers robust performance, excellent compatibility, and future-proof connectivity in one package.
Key Features
Chipset / Architecture
Utilises ASMedia ASM3142: A PCIe-to-USB3.1 Gen2 host controller supporting up to 10 Gbps per port and compliant with the xHCI 1.1 specification.
Uses VIA Labs VL820-Q8: A multi-port USB 3.1 Gen2 hub supporting 10 Gbps and designed for multi-downstream port layouts
Interface
Plugs into your motherboard’s PCIe slot (typically PCIe x4 or higher).
Backward compatible with PCIe 2.0/3.0 depending on your motherboard.
Supports USB 3.1 Gen2 (“SuperSpeed+”) up to 10 Gbps.
Ports
External ports: e.g., 4 × USB-A (Type-A) + 4 × USB-C (Type-C).
All ports capable of USB3.1 Gen2 speeds (10 Gbps) when properly supported.
Backward compatible with USB 3.0, 2.0, 1.x devices.
Performance / Compatibility
Each port supports high-speed transfers up to 10 Gbps (when the host slot and connected device support it).
Compatible with modern operating systems: Windows (Win7/8/10/11), Linux kernels (various).
Ideal for connecting fast external SSDs, USB-C docks, multi-port hubs, and more.
Power & Protection
Ports include over-current protection and independent port power control.
Ensure your motherboard slot provides sufficient current for multiple high-power devices.
Form-Factor & Installation
Full-height bracket included. (It does not support low profile bracket)
Requires free PCIe slot (preferably x4 or x16 for full bandwidth)
Plug and play in most cases; driver installation may be required for older Operating Systems.
Benefits & Use Cases
- Upgrade older PCs that lack USB-C or high-speed USB ports: you now get 10 Gbps external connectivity.
- Content creators, power users transferring large video/audio files or backing up large external SSDs will appreciate the higher throughput.
- Workstations/servers needing multiple external USB ports for storage devices, backup drives, docking setups.
- Gaming/VR rigs – connect multiple VR devices, high-speed capture devices, etc., without relying solely on onboard ports.

Important Considerations & Compatibility Tips
- Slot bandwidth matters: To realise full 10 Gbps speeds on all ports, ensure the PCIe slot is x4 (or more) and your motherboard supports sufficient lanes/bandwidth. Some users report limited performance when the card is placed in a slot with fewer lanes.
- Device support: The connected USB device must also support USB 3.1 Gen2 (10 Gbps) to get full speed; if it’s USB3.0 (5 Gbps) or USB2 (480 Mbps), you’ll be limited accordingly.
- Motherboard compatibility: Some older motherboards may need BIOS updates; some cards may not show full speed if chipset drivers/firmware are outdated.
- Cables matter: For USB-C devices expecting 10 Gbps, ensure you use a USB-C cable rated for USB 3.1 Gen2, as cheaper cables may be limited to 5 Gbps.
- Power supply: If you plan to attach many high-current USB devices (SSD enclosures, etc.), make sure your system’s power and slot can handle the load.
- Heat & cooling: While these cards aren’t typically extremely hot, multi-port high-speed cards can heat up under heavy load; allow for airflow.
- Driver & OS support: While Windows 10/11 and most Linux kernels support the ASM3142 and VL820 series, older OSes (Windows 7/8) might need manual driver installation.
- Shared bandwidth: If all ports are used simultaneously at high speed, total throughput is shared over the PCIe interface — performance may vary.
Hardware Installation
1. Turn Off the power to your computer.
2. Unplug the power cord and remove your computer’s cover.
3. Remove the slot bracket from an available PCIe X4 slot.
4. To install the card, carefully align the card’s bus connector with the selected PCIe slot on the motherboard. Push the board down firmly.
5. Replace the slot bracket’s holding screw to secure the card.
6. Replace the computer cover and reconnect the power cord
